"Toyland"
(1903)
Lyrics: G. MacDonough
Music: Victor Herbert
Arr: Ruth Randle © 2006
Toyland is
from a popular American operetta called Babes in
Toyland. Victor Herbert, a classical musician, composed
the music for this song, as well as for other
compositions from the same production (March of the
Toy Soldiers, etc). Generations have grown up with
this wistful tune, whose lyrics remind us of our
carefree childhood and the sadness of leaving it behind
as we grow older.
This arrangement uses
an assortment of colorful chords that may surprise you. It
provides a good example of how music can be used to
describe the feelings conveyed by the lyrics themselves.
Play it slowly, with expression. Let us know if you
enjoy this composer’s tunes (he wrote lots more!)
