Ave Maria arranged for the mountain dulcimer in the 1-3-5 tuning available from www.mountaindulcimer-1-3-5.com
Something New for the Dulcimer
John Sackenheim and I, continuing to explore
the limits of 1-3-5 tunings, have turned our attention
to classical music. This may not be everyone’s “cup of
tea”, so we’ve chosen a favorite of many, known as “Ave
Maria”. In doing so, we discovered there are
actually two well-known melodies of that title, one by
Franz Schubert (1797-1825), and a second by Charles
Gounod (1818-1893), based on an earlier composition by
Johann S. Bach (1685-1750). In fact, there are actually
many other religious compositions by that title. This is
explained by the fact that the term, meaning Hail
Mary, denotes a particular form of prayer within the
Catholic faith. The lyrics are attributed to the words
of the angel Gabriel (Luke 1:28), adopted as a popular
devotional prayer as early as the 11th
century.
Schubert’s composition came first in the form
of a song based on the poem “Lady of the Lake”,
by Sir Walter Scott. Gounod’s, on the other hand, was
written as a melody superimposed on the Prelude in C
major of Bach’s composition, “The Well-Tempered
Clavier”.
John arranged the
Schubert version, and I did the Bach/Gounod. Both were
great challenges as dulcimer arrangements, especially
since both were based on musical scores intended for
church organs. We both feel the results are well worth
the effort, and leave it to you folks to be the judges.
Below are Midi files music notation/tab files of both
arrangements for your listening and playing pleasure. We
would appreciate it if you would sign our guestbook.
Thank you,
Merv and
John
