"New" Old Hymns for the
Mountain Dulcimer - 20 old favorites in 1-3-5 tuning by
John Sackenheim
This book contains twenty hymns, arranged by John
Sackenheim using the 1-3-5 tuning. This tuning,
and John's arrangements of these hymns, provides the
opportunity for mountain dulcimer players to hear the
hymns with the fuller sound of more complete chords and
embellishments. Some of the hymns would be very
hard, or impossible, to play in DAd and DAA.
The tablature features the melody notes in large bold
numerals and the filler (embellishments) in a smaller,
fine line numerals. The beginner can play the bold
numbers and the hymn will sound just fine. The
intermediate and advanced player can use all the numbers
for a more arranged sound.
John has included lyrics with
additional verses. In addition to the arrangements
themselves, each music selection has a sheet describing
special historical notes of interest, and a listing of
other hymns written by the authors and composers of
words and music.
The book is spiral-bound to
lie flat, with a plastic outer cover. I am very
impressed by the arrangements, and found the extra
historical information to be very interesting. I
expect to enjoy many hours of playing through this new
tablature book,

In the Volume 31, No. 2 (May 2005-July 2005) issue of
the dulcimer Players News Neal Walters wrote, "John has
published a wonderful book of gospel material arranged
for the mountain dulcimer using the 1-3-5 tuning. The
book is designed for beginning and intermediate players,
but advanced players will find it fascinating as well.
This book is an introduction to 1-3-5 tuning.
There are familiar tunes to get you started plus a
number of less familiar tunes to enjoy as well."
